Sacramento – The Department of Motor Vehicles urges Californians interested in applying for a REAL ID to do so during special “REAL ID Saturday” events on Saturday, February 22, at DMV offices in Chico, Davis, Laguna Hills, Reedley, San Ysidro, Seaside and Ukiah.
The DMV’s “REAL ID Saturday” will be committed exclusively to processing REAL ID applications. Customers can stop by the seven offices at their convenience, without an appointment, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Customers must complete the online REAL ID application at dmv.ca.gov before their visit and bring the required documents (see below).
In addition to the seven “REAL ID Saturday” offices, the DMV has more than 60 offices open every Saturday. Customers can visit those offices for other DMV services each Saturday, as well as apply for a REAL ID.
The Chico, Davis, Laguna Hills, Reedley, San Ysidro, Seaside and Ukiah offices, which typically open Monday through Friday, are offering this one-day Saturday service to encourage area residents to apply for a REAL ID.
“We encourage people to come to DMV offices to apply for a REAL ID now, while wait times are low,” said DMV Director Steve Gordon. “We know people procrastinate and the closer it gets to October, the more crowded our offices will be.”
Starting October 1, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will require residents to show a valid passport or other federally approved document, like a REAL ID driver license or identification card, to board flights within the United States and access secure federal facilities and military bases.
To apply for a REAL ID driver license or identification card, Californians must visit a DMV office and bring the following documents:
- One proof of identity* – original or certified (examples: valid passport, birth certificate)
* Legal name change document(s) required if name on proof of identity is different than current name - One proof of Social Security number (examples: Social Security card, W-2)
- Two proofs of California residency – paper copies (examples: utility bill, bank statement)
Visit dmv.ca.gov for a complete list of acceptable documents and a link to the online application.
The DMV has launched a number of initiatives to provide more service options outside of its offices and free up space for Californians applying for a REAL ID (no appointment necessary), including:
- Creating a DMV Anytime webpage to easily connect customers with business partners for vehicle registration transactions;
- Expanding DMV Now Kiosks to more convenient locations across the state;
- Offering new online services, such as ordering replacement vehicle registration cards and stickers.
