motor-driven cycle, and you must have a motorcycle license (M1) to drive one.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-dmv-spacer-block spacer-box\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mopeds<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Also known as a motorized bicycle, a moped has 2-3 wheels and an electric motor with an automatic transmission that produces less than 4 gross brake horsepower.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some mopeds have pedals so you can ride them when the motor is off. <cite class=\"dmv-citation\">CVC \u00a7406<\/cite><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You must have a motorcycle license (M1 or M2) to drive a moped.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You must be at least 16 years old or older to drive a moped, and you must wear a helmet while you ride.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You do not need insurance to register a moped, but you do need special <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/vehicle-registration\/license-plates-decals-and-placards\/license-plates\/\">license plates<\/a> and an identification card, along with a one-time $23 registration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/vehicle-registration\/registration-fees\/\">fee<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span role=\"region\" class=\"format-label--note\"><span class=\"format-label__text\">Note<\/span> You do not have to renew your moped registration in the same way as you register other vehicles.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-dmv-spacer-block while riding it.<cite class=\"dmv-citation\">CVC \u00a7407.5<\/cite><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can only drive motorized scooters on a bicycle path, trail, or bikeway, <strong>not<\/strong> on a sidewalk, and you cannot exceed a speed of 15 mph.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You do not need to register motorized scooters.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can drive a motorized scooter with any class driver&#8217;s license.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-dmv-spacer-block spacer-box\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Miniature Motorcycles, Electric Motorcycles &amp; Motorized Scooters<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Please note that miniature vehicles&nbsp;(also known as mini choppers or pocket bikes) cannot be registered or operated on public streets because they do not meet Federal Safety Standards.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Electric Motorcylces (eMotos)<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;are off-highway electric vehicles that are subject to&nbsp;<a href=\"\/portal\/vehicle-registration\/new-registration\/register-an-off-highway-vehicle-ohv\/\">off-highway vehicle registration<\/a>&nbsp;and must display an OHV permit or plate. To qualify as an eMoto, the vehicle must be designed for off-highway use, powered by an electric motor, have handlebars for steering, a straddle seat, two wheels, and no pedals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Motorized Scooters<\/strong>&nbsp;can be operated on public streets, but they do not require registration. Riders must be at least 16 years old and possess a valid driver\u2019s license or permit to operate a motorized scooter.
