DMV’s Mission<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The DMV promotes traffic safety by identifying and reducing unsafe driving. While a driver license supports personal independence, the DMV must ensure drivers can operate vehicles safely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reporting an Unsafe Driver<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To report someone who may be unsafe to drive, submit a Request for Driver Reexamination (DS 699) (PDF)<\/a><\/em> or send a signed letter to your local Driver Safety office explaining your concerns. You may request confidentiality. Reports related to medical conditions are confidential under California Vehicle Code \u00a71808.5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maintaining Your Driving Independence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Health changes\u2014such as vision issues, dementia, stroke, arthritis, diabetes, neuropathy, or mobility limitations\u2014can affect driving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vision Testing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

All new and renewing driver license applicants must pass a vision test. Bring your current glasses or contacts. If tested with corrective lenses, a \u201ccorrective lenses\u201d restriction will be added to your license.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you can\u2019t read the eye chart, a vision machine will be used. DMV standards require:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
