habits you need to drive well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Locate the Controls<\/strong><br>Locate the following controls and explain how they work:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Four-way flashers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Emergency and parking brakes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Headlights.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Heater\/defroster.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Horn.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Windshield wipers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Before Starting the Vehicle<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Adjust the mirrors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fasten safety belt.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Starting the Vehicle<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Vehicle is in &#8220;Park&#8221; or &#8220;Neutral.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Foot is on the brake pedal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Start vehicle smoothly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Moving Forward<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Signal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Look over shoulder before pulling into traffic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use both hands on opposite sides of the steering wheel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stopping<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Stop when necessary behind crosswalks or limit lines.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use correct foot on the brake pedal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Turns<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Signal and slow for turns.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Begin and end turns in the correct lane.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Yield right-of-way, when necessary.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accept legal right-of-way, when safe.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>See and react to hazards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Backing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Before moving, survey the surroundings for possible obstacles.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Look back over right shoulder when backing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check your mirrors and glance quickly to the side while backing up.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Changing Lanes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Signal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check the mirrors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check your blind spot over your shoulder.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Change lanes safely.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Parking on Hills<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Signal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Curb the wheels properly depending on whether you are facing uphill or downhill.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set the parking brake.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Signal and check your blind spot over your shoulder before entering traffic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Parallel Parking<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Signal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check your blind spot and look over your shoulder while backing up.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Yield to other vehicles when necessary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Entering the Freeway<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check the traffic flow.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Signal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Time your entry into the freeway.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check your blind spot over your shoulder when accelerating into a gap in traffic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Signal early and slow down on the exit ramp to meet the posted speed limit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adjust your speed to suit road conditions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Defensive Driving Techniques<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check your mirrors frequently and before braking.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check the cross streets before entering intersections.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check the signal lights and signs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep your eyes &#8220;moving&#8221; (watching sides and middle of road).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep a &#8220;space cushion&#8221; around the vehicle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follow at a
