SE plates have a fixed expiration of 12\/31 every five years and must be renewed between January 1  and February 4 following the expiration date. Fees are not prorated on original or renewal applications. Refer to Appendix 1F for fees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span role=\"region\" class=\"format-label--note\"><span class=\"format-label__text\">Note<\/span> Government-owned vehicles subject to SE plate requirements are exempt from the SE plate fee. These applications are only processed by SPU in DMV headquarters.prorated on original or renewal applications. Refer to Appendix 1F for fees.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-dmv-spacer-block spacer-box\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>SE plates are <strong>optional<\/strong> for implements of husbandry (VC \u00a736000).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SE plates are <strong>required<\/strong> for:<br>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Special mobile equipment (VC \u00a7575).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Special construction equipment (VC \u00a7565).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cemetery equipment (VC \u00a74012).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Farm vehicles (VC \u00a736101).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Logging vehicles (VC \u00a7379).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Water Tank Trucks Owned by an Equipment Rental Company<\/strong>\u2014A water tank truck owned by an equipment rental company may be issued SE plates if usage is limited on the rental contract to highway construction or railroad right-of-way construction or maintenance. A REG 256 <strong>must<\/strong> be submitted with the plate application, as listed in SE Plate Applications in this section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SE Plate Applications\u2014The applicant must submit:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A completed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/file\/application-for-special-equipment-identification-plate-reg-88-pdf\/\">Application for Special Equipment Identification Plate (REG 88) (PDF)<\/a> form, which <strong>fully<\/strong> describes the use of the vehicle and\/or equipment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A photo of the entire vehicle\/equipment. The photo should not exceed the size of the REG 88. One photo is acceptable for multiple applications for identical vehicles\/equipment presented at the same time. Cross-reference each application without a photo to the application with the photo. Write \u201cRefer to ID# for photo\u201d on the face of those applications.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An SE fee for each vehicle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/file\/statement-of-facts-reg-256-pdf\/\">REG 256 (PDF)<\/a> for water tank trucks owned by an equipment rental company which certifies \u201cThe vehicle is limited by contract for use on highway construction or railroad rights-of-way construction or maintenance.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>DMV will not process the application if any of the following apply, the: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use is <strong>not<\/strong> adequately explained.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use or design conflicts with the specifications in the <em>California Vehicle Code<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Photo or required fee is <strong>not<\/strong> submitted. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For a utility-terrain vehicle (UTV), change the body type model (BTM) to \u201cFARM\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Collect the fee due. A late penalty is <strong>not<\/strong> assessed for SE plates.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Process an exempt agency application as a no-fee transaction. An Application for Title or Registration (REG 343) form is <strong>not <\/strong>required.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If a \u201ctitle only\u201d or \u201ctransfer only\u201d application is made at the same time, collect the title\/transfer only fee in addition to the SE fee. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Send the application to SPU in DMV headquarters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span role=\"region\" class=\"format-label--important\"><span class=\"format-label__text\">Important<\/span> <strong> Do not<\/strong> issue SE plates to concrete pumps\/pumper booms, oil well drilling rigs, and other similar equipment.
