{"id":14215,"date":"2020-04-15T15:30:08","date_gmt":"2020-04-15T22:30:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/handbook\/vehicle-industry-registration-procedures-manual-2\/commercial-vehicles\/station-wagons\/"},"modified":"2024-03-12T12:55:23","modified_gmt":"2024-03-12T19:55:23","slug":"station-wagons","status":"publish","type":"dmv_handbook","link":"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/handbook\/vehicle-industry-registration-procedures-manual-2\/commercial-vehicles\/station-wagons\/","title":{"rendered":"13.115 Station Wagons (VC \u00a7\u00a7585 and 9404)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A station wagon is a dual-purpose vehicle to transport persons in such a manner that the seats may be removed or folded out of the way to increase the property carrying space within the vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A hatchback-type vehicle with a rear seat that folds down or is removable and a door in the rear that provides direct access to the vehicle\u2019s interior cargo-carrying area when the seat is folded down or removed may be considered a station wagon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Station wagons are&nbsp;<strong>not<\/strong>&nbsp;required or permitted to be registered as commercial vehicles&nbsp;<strong>except<\/strong>&nbsp;when:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Used to transport persons \u201cfor hire.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Registered in the name of a business.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Used by an owner who is engaged in a bona fide business and the vehicle is registered to the business.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The owner certifies they are required to own and operate a station wagon registered to them as a requirement of employment at a bona fide business.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span role=\"region\" class=\"format-label--note\"><span class=\"format-label__text\">Note<\/span> \u201cEngaged in business\u201d means engaged in a bona fide trade, business, or commerce, or a profession licensed for measurement of land, construction quantities, of the dimension of structures. It does not include any other type of profession.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the usual registration requirements,&nbsp;<strong>the following must be submitted<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/file\/request-for-commercial-registration-of-a-passenger-vehicle-reg-590\/\">Request for Commercial Registration of a Passenger Vehicle (REG 590)<\/a> form completed by the owner.
