It does <strong>not<\/strong> prevent any vehicle from being registered in California on a nontransferable (goldenrod) basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Generally, interstate registration is for nonresident commercial vehicles operating in more than one state without reciprocity. However, automobiles may also be registered on an interstate basis. California residents may obtain interstate registration for vehicles registered in another state, but a California resident who is exempt from registering in another state should not be encouraged to pay fees to both states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Registration Requirements\u2014The following must be submitted:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A completed an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/file\/application-for-title-or-registration-reg-343-pdf\/\">REG 343 (PDF)<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/file\/verification-of-vehicle-reg-31-pdf\/\">REG 31 (PDF)<\/a> verification <strong>must<\/strong> show the motive power.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A smog certification, if appropriate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A weight certificate, if a commercial vehicle. A weight certificate is <strong>not<\/strong> required if the vehicle:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Was previously registered in California <strong>and<\/strong> no changes have been made to the vehicle; however, the owner <strong>must<\/strong> complete a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/file\/statement-of-facts-reg-256-pdf\/\">REG 256  (PDF)<\/a>certifying this fact.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is a two-axle or three-axle motor vehicle weighing 10,001 or more pounds; however, a REG 256 with the estimated weight is <strong>required<\/strong>. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weighs less than 6,001 pounds unladen, empty, scale, or tare weight, as indicated on the nonresident title or registration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is a trailer or semitrailer being registered under the Permanent Trailer Identification (PTI) program; however, a REG 256 with the estimated weight <strong>is required<\/strong>. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A REG 4008 for commercial vehicles over 6,001 pounds, except pickups. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Full-year registration fees and use tax, if due.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Interstate Registration Renewals<\/strong>\u2014Interstate registration is renewed the same as other California registration. The nonresident registration is <strong>not<\/strong> inspected for renewal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Vehicles Registered in Mexico or Newfoundland<\/strong> may be issued interstate registration under the following conditions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Commercial vehicles over 7,000 pounds unladen <strong>must<\/strong> submit proof of insurance by an insurance company authorized to do business in California.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Insurance coverage <strong>must<\/strong> be in the amounts specified below. Additional coverage <strong>is required<\/strong> for commercial vehicles hauling petroleum or hazardous waste (VC \u00a716500.5 and <em>California Public Utilities Code<\/em> \u00a73631).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>$250,000 Public Liability Per Person<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$500,000 Public Liability Per Accident<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$100,000 Property Damage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$600,000 Combined Total Coverage<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>International Traffic Vehicles<\/strong>\u2014There are additional clearance requirements for international traffic vehicles. These are <strong>heavy duty<\/strong> commercial vehicles which are allowed to import and\/or pick up merchandise and leave as expeditiously as possible. They enter California for the sole purpose of doing business and do not intend to remain here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span role=\"region\" class=\"format-label--note\"><span class=\"format-label__text\">Note<\/span> Light weight pickup trucks and\/or automobiles are <strong>not<\/strong> included in this classification.
