Even if you still have DMV-issued paper documentation for your vehicle, you must re-establish a digital record of your vehicle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-dmv-spacer-block spacer-box\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-dmv-container shadow-box\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>If you have the title:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you <strong>do <\/strong>have the California Certificate of Title or the original expired California registration card (not a photocopy), you can submit a new registration application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You will need:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A completed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/file\/application-for-title-or-registration-reg-343-pdf\/\">Application for Title or Registration (REG 343) (PDF)<\/a> form.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A completed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/file\/verification-of-vehicle-reg-31-pdf\/\">Verification of Vehicle (REG 31) (PDF)<\/a> form. This form must be completed by an authorized DMV employee or peace officer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The California Certificate of Title or registration card for your vehicle.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you do not have the Certificate of Title, you will need an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/file\/reg-227-pdf\/\">Application for Replacement or Transfer of Title (REG 227) (PDF)<\/a> form.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are not the owner named on the title or registration card, then the Certificate of Title must be properly endorsed for transfer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/file\/planned-non-operation-certification-reg-102-pdf\/\">Certificate of Non-Operation\/Planned Non-Operation Certification (REG 102) (PDF)<\/a> form or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/file\/statement-of-facts-reg-256-pdf\/\">Statement of Facts (REG 256) (PDF)<\/a> certifying to the non-operation of the vehicle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The odometer disclosure statement completed on a Vehicle\/Vessel Transfer and Reassignment Form (REG 262). <cite class=\"dmv-citation\">This form is not available online because it is printed on security paper; call DMV at 1-800-777-0133 to request one be mailed to you.<\/cite> for motor vehicles less than 10 model years old.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/handbook\/vehicle-industry-registration-procedures-manual-2\/commercial-vehicles\/weight-certificate\/\">weight<\/a> certificate for commercial vehicles weighing less than 10,001 pounds unladen or a <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/file\/statement-of-facts-reg-256-pdf\/\">REG 256 (PDF)<\/a><\/span>\u00a0form from the owner certifying the weight has not changed.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If the vehicle weighs 10,001 pounds or more, or is a Permanent Trailer Identification (PTI) trailer, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/file\/statement-of-facts-reg-256-pdf\/\">REG 256 (PDF)<\/a><span> certifying the estimated weight is required.<\/span> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>If you do not have the title:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you <strong>do not <\/strong>have a California Certificate of Title or expired registration card, or you only have a photocopy of the registration card, the following items are required to register your vehicle:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A completed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/file\/reg-227-pdf\/\">Application for Replacement or Transfer of Title (REG 227) (PDF)<\/a> form along with an original registration card.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you submit a REG 227 form and the registration card shows a legal owner (lienholder), you must submit a notarized <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/file\/lien-satisfied-title-holder-release-reg-166-pdf\/\">Legal Owner\/Title Holder Release (REG 166) (PDF)<\/a> form.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A completed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/file\/application-for-title-or-registration-reg-343-pdf\/\">Application for Title or Registration (REG 343) (PDF)<\/a> form.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Cost Information section of REG 343 must be completed with the purchase price to establish a vehicle license fee classification.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/file\/verification-of-vehicle-reg-31-pdf\/\">Verification of Vehicle (REG 31) (PDF)<\/a> form.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This form must be completed by an authorized DMV employee or any peace officer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/file\/statement-of-facts-reg-256-pdf\/\">Statement of Facts (REG 256) (PDF)<\/a> form containing the following information:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How, when, and from whom the vehicle was acquired.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Efforts you made to get evidence of ownership and why you were unable to get it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The current value of the vehicle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A weight certificate (for a commercial vehicle weighing less than 10,001 pounds unladen).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If the vehicle weighs 10,001 pounds or more, or is a trailer in the Permanent Trailer Identification (PTI) program, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/file\/statement-of-facts-reg-256-pdf\/\">Statement of Facts (REG 256) (PDF)<\/a> certifying the estimated weight is required.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/file\/planned-non-operation-certification-reg-102-pdf\/\">Certificate of Non-Operation\/Planned Non-Operation Certification (REG 102) (PDF)<\/a> form or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/file\/statement-of-facts-reg-256-pdf\/\">REG 256 (PDF)<\/a> form stating that the vehicle will not be operated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The odometer disclosure statement completed on a Vehicle\/Vessel Transfer and Reassignment Form (REG 262). <cite class=\"dmv-citation\">This form is not available online because it is printed on security paper; call DMV at 1-800-777-0133 to request one be mailed to you.<\/cite><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A completed REG 262 form (for motor vehicles less than 10 model years old).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the vehicle is valued at $5,000 or more, you may need a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/file\/motor-vehicle-ownership-surety-bond-reg-5057-pdf\/\">Motor Vehicle Ownership Surety Bond (REG 5057) (PDF)<\/a>. Call (800) 777-0133 or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/locations\/field-offices\/\">visit a DMV office<\/a> for assistance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In some cases, you may also need to submit the following:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A smog certification based on the model year of the vehicle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The license plates from the vehicle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For commercial motor vehicles, you may need a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/file\/declaration-of-gross-vehicle-weight-gvw-combined-gross-vehicle-weight-cgw-reg-4008-pdf\/\">Declaration of Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW)\/Combined Gross Vehicle Weight (CGW) (REG 4008) (PDF)<\/a> form.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Exempt<span>: Pickups that have an unladen weight of 8,000 pounds or less, a gross vehicle weight rating of 11,499 pounds or less, and that do not exceed 9 feet in length.<\/span> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/file\/permanent-trailer-identification-pti-certification-and-application-reg-4017-pdf\/\">Permanent Trailer Identification (PTI) Certification (REG 4017) (PDF)<\/a> form for trailers in the PTI program if the owner requests a Certificate of Title.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you do not plan to operate the vehicle, but wish to obtain a Certificate of Title issued in your name, you may apply for a &#8220;Title Only&#8221; by completing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/file\/statement-of-facts-reg-256-pdf\/\">REG 256 (PDF)<\/a> form and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/file\/planned-non-operation-certification-reg-102-pdf\/\">REG 102 (PDF)<\/a> form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-dmv-spacer-block spacer-box\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do I need to pay any fees?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fees are due from the first time you drive your vehicle.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span role=\"region\" class=\"format-label--note\"><span class=\"format-label__text\">Note<\/span> Make sure you pay your fees <strong><span>before<\/span><\/strong> <strong><span>operating <\/span><\/strong>the vehicle.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The amount of fees due (except for trailers in the PTI program) will depend on the cost of the vehicle, the county of residence, and the type of vehicle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A fee estimate can be determined at the time of your registration application. You can also use the <a href=\"\/portal\/es\/vehicle-registration\/registration-fees\/vehicle-registration-fee-calculator\/\">online vehicle registration fee (VLF) calculator<\/a> to calculate an
