{"id":14890,"date":"2020-04-15T15:41:45","date_gmt":"2020-04-15T22:41:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/handbook\/vehicle-industry-registration-procedures-manual-2\/bonds-and-certifications\/introduction\/"},"modified":"2024-11-12T09:18:34","modified_gmt":"2024-11-12T17:18:34","slug":"introduction","status":"publish","type":"dmv_handbook","link":"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/handbook\/vehicle-industry-registration-procedures-manual-2\/bonds-and-certifications\/introduction\/","title":{"rendered":"23.000 Introduction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DMV may accept an applicant\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/file\/statement-of-facts-reg-256-pdf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Statement of Facts (REG 256) (PDF)<\/a> form, a motor vehicle or vessel bond, or a bond alternative to support the issuance of a California title when regular evidence of ownership for the vehicle or vessel is not obtainable. <cite class=\"dmv-citation\">(CVC \u00a7\u00a74157, 9923, and 9924)<\/cite><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The value of the vehicle or vessel and type of application determines which document is required. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When a bond is required for registration of a vehicle or vessel, the:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bond <strong>must <\/strong>be for an amount equal to the market value of the vehicle\/vessel. The market value is determined by taking the midpoint value between the wholesale and retail values shown in a recognized industry motor vehicle valuation and pricing handbook.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Application <strong>must <\/strong>include a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/file\/statement-of-facts-reg-256-pdf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">REG 256 (PDF)<\/a> completed by the applicant stating the reason for submitting a bond.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bond may be submitted by the applicant, another person or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/?s=Bonds\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/driver-licenses-identification-cards\/dl-id-online-app-edl-44\/\">en l\u00ednea<\/a><\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span role=\"region\" class=\"format-label--note\"><span class=\"format-label__text\">Note<\/span> A bond with the preprinted signature and notary acknowledgment of the surety <strong>is <\/strong>not acceptable. However, the signature and acknowledgment of the principal <strong>must <\/strong>be original.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Vehicles<\/strong>\u2014Accept a motor vehicle bond for any vehicle, including one from another state or country, when regular evidence of ownership is not obtainable. This includes an application to convert a nontransferable (goldenrod) registration.
