{"id":14755,"date":"2020-04-15T15:39:10","date_gmt":"2020-04-15T22:39:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/handbook\/vehicle-industry-registration-procedures-manual-2\/special-plates\/personalized-configurations-mandatory-refusal\/"},"modified":"2024-04-25T13:56:19","modified_gmt":"2024-04-25T20:56:19","slug":"personalized-configurations-mandatory-refusal","status":"publish","type":"dmv_handbook","link":"https:\/\/www.dmv.ca.gov\/portal\/es\/handbook\/vehicle-industry-registration-procedures-manual-2\/special-plates\/personalized-configurations-mandatory-refusal\/","title":{"rendered":"21.180 Personalized Configurations&mdash;Mandatory Refusal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DMV must refuse any personalized license plate configuration that may carry connotations offensive to good taste and decency, or which would be misleading, based on criteria which includes, but is not limited to, any configuration that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Has a sexual connotation or is a term of lust or depravity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is a vulgar term; a term of contempt, prejudice, or hostility; an insulting or degrading term; a racially degrading term; or an ethnically degrading term.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is a swear word or term considered profane, obscene, or repulsive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Has been restricted (deleted) from regular series license plates.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Has a negative connotation to a specific group.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Misrepresents a law enforcement entity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is a foreign or slang word or term.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is a phonetic spelling or mirror image of a word or term falling into the categories described above.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Similar Configurations<\/strong>\u2014 A personalized license plate application for a configuration similar in appearance to an existing special license plate are not accepted. Applicants cannot substitute a letter for a number or a number for a letter in the middle, front, or end of a configuration it it creates a configuration similar to an existing special license plate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Unacceptable Letter\/Number Substitutions<\/strong>\u2014Any special license plate application which contains \u201c1\u201d and \u201cI\u201d used interchangeable or \u201c0\u201d and \u201cO\u201d or \u201cQ\u201d used interchangeably must be rejected. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Restricted License Plate Configurations<\/strong>\u2014The following configurations are deleted from the regular series license plate configuration and <strong>are not<\/strong> available for personalized license plates:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><p style=\"text-align: left\">ABM &nbsp;
